A week ago at the LJC we had our first Unconference which was held at IBM’s South Bank offices and it was a superb success. We had a good mix of full presentations, lightening talks & discussion groups (the full list can be seen below) before retiring to the Slaughtered Lamb to chat about the day. The feedback I have picked up on the day and read afterwards suggests that everyone had a great time and we will look to repeat the event next year.

My thanks go firstly to Zoe Slattery of IBM. The Unconference was Zoe’s initial idea and it was Zoe that lead the initial planning and organization of the event, with Martijn Verburg and myself. Zoe has been involved with BarCamp and a few similar events in the past and her experience was evident in ensuring it was carefully planned to get the most out of the day. Zoe’s latest blog post illustrates her experience with Unconferences. http://zoomsplatter.blogspot.com/

Martijn was great, not just with the pre-event planning but making sure the day ran smoothly from 8:30am to 11:00pm whilst giving a few presentations along the way, I would recommend everyone check his presentation on “How to be a rock star developer” http://martijnverburg.blogspot.com/2009/12/how-to-be-rock-star-developer.html

Thanks to IBM for allowing us to use their impressive South Bank offices. There were no marketing messages rammed home, the whole event was run by the IBM development team & the LJC.

Thanks to Catherine Hope, Mark Hindness, Anthony Phillips & Robin Fernandes of the IBM Development team who helped with the planning, and making sure the day went well (as well as giving presentations that proved to be very popular)

Finally thanks to everyone who came along on the day and got involved either with presenting or attending the events. You made the event what it was. I look forward to the next one – which is already in the initial planning. Watch this space!

Normal Talks (40 mins)

  • Bug of the month

  • Java development tools shoot-out
  • Performance tuning hygeine

Quick membership update for you – today we hit 800 members and are seeing a real surge in activity through the group and with readers of the blog!

Just 2 weeks ago today I announced that we had hit 750 – I’m really pleased that we are continuing to grow and it’s incredible to read all the various places our new members are coming from… of course the amount of active members is a more important statistic than the total number of members, but they need to be in the community to get involved. The news that the Brazilian Java Community has over 30,000 members is very inspiring and I see no reason why we can’t triple again in size by the end of next year!!

Keep spreading the word guys – 1000 members here we come!

Skills Matter, our sponsor, is organising some exciting conferences in London, UK for the open source and agile developer community. They have offered LJC members 25% discount of the ticket price. To qualify for this special community discount, please email me for the discount code to use when registering, or see our mailing list.

I have created a Wikimap for anyone to contribute to. The aim of the map is to make it easy for students, graduates and entry level programmers to understand the industry and decide which route seems more appealing.

I need help from the LJC to add to the map and highlight areas that I have missed or information that you feel would be useful.

It can be found here: http://www.mindmeister.com/34704025/a-career-in-software

We are now an official Java User Group (JUG) http://www.java.net/project/london-java-community-0

This will not affect the way that we are run however we can now benefit from being hooked into the international Java User Group scene and can benefit from Java developers moving to the UK looking for a User Group to participate in. If anyone is planning to relocate overseas let me know and I can provide an introduction to the User Group in that country. To read further about Sun’s JUG scheme you can visit this site: http://java.sun.com/community/usergroups/

I enquired as to how large the communities grow and was sent these statistics:

Cologne JUG Germany — has about 900 members

javaBin Norway runs JavaZone conference: 2000+ members

Belgian JUG runs DEVOXX.com developer conference about 2000 members

Netherlands JUG nljug.org runs Masters of Java Coding Competition, J-Fall Developer Conference, J-Spring Developer Conf. 3000 members

Java Community Process of Korea has over 8000 members in Seoul

But the big one – DFJUG Brasilia Brazil has over 30,000 JUG members!!!

James Ward: The RIA Cowboy

We have just confirmed a new Free Meetup from Adobe’s James Ward: Click the above link to RSVP.

RIAs with Java, Spring, Hibernate, BlazeDS, and Flex

Java developers want to use what they already know to build great software.

Rich Internet Applications allow us to build better software but with many of the options out there developers have to replace what they know with a new software stack. This session will help you learn how to use what you already know to begin building RIAs. For those new to Flex the session it will cover the basics of connecting a Flex application to a Java back-end powered by Spring and Hibernate. There will be tons of code aimed at those looking to make the move to RIA.

As usual we will find a suitable bar to frequent after the presentation for a free sponsored drink from myself.

James Ward is a Technical Evangelist for Flex at Adobe and Adobe’s JCP representative to JSR 286, 299, and 301. Much like his love for climbing mountains he enjoys programming because it provides endless new discoveries, elegant workarounds, summits and valleys. His adventures in climbing have taken him many places. Likewise, technology has brought him many adventures, including: Pascal and Assembly back in the early 90’s; Perl, HTML, and JavaScript in the mid 90’s; then Java and many of it’s frameworks beginning in the late 90’s. Today he primarily uses Flex to build beautiful front-ends for Java based back-ends. Prior to Adobe, James built a rich marketing and customer service portal for Pillar Data Systems.
